If you're looking to save money on moving costs, making your own preparations prior to moving day will be a great way to start.  Obviously, the less we have to pack or dismantle on the day the lower our costs will be, so early preparation is key.

We've put together some tips to help your moving day run smoothly.

  • Book your move between 2 and 4 weeks before your moving day.
  • Clean out and pack least-used areas such as closets, attics and basements as soon as you decide to move.
  • Pack a box of essential items that you will need immediately after the move and make sure it’s the last thing added to the truck (or keep it in your car with you).
  • Always tape boxes, avoid interlocking the tops.
  • Use small boxes for books or heavy items − boxes get very heavy, very fast!
  • Pack your items using quality removalist boxes, as other boxes may not be sturdy enough to properly support your belongings. Conventional boxes may also be weakened by insects which live in them. Moving U Removals can supply boxes if required (boxes should be returned with all packing tape removed).
  • For large appliances, be sure to check your instruction manuals for any special instructions when moving.
  • Clearly label all boxes - top and sides.
  • When dismantling furniture and items with small parts, tape all pieces/parts to the main base.
  • If possible, pack electronic equipment, such as stereos, in their original boxes. Otherwise, bubble wrap is best for packing these items.
  • If you're relying on friends and family to help you move, have a back-up plan in case they can't or don't show up.
  • Avoid packing in boxes without closable tops. Open boxes are difficult to pack properly in the truck and may expose your possessions to the risk of damage.
  • Never use printed newsprint to wrap fine china.
  • Always stack dishes upwards (on top of each other) when packing.
  • Pack important and sentimental documents separately for easy access (such as children’s health records, passports, family records, insurance information and photo albums).
  • Remember: the heavier the item, the smaller the box!
  • Avoid using duct tape for packing − packing tape is much more practical and easier to remove.
  • Use custom-designed boxes when packing fine china and delicate items.
  • Pack room-for-room − avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box.
  • Use wardrobe boxes to make clothes easier to pack. Clothes in drawers can be placed in suitcases and bags. We offer port-a-robes too.
  • To help your kids cope better in their new environment, keep their favourite possessions or toys handy. Even if you think an item should be thrown away before the move to cut down on bulk, just waiting a few weeks until they have adjusted could save a lot of grief.
  • Pack and unpack breakables over a padded surface (blanket, etc.) in case something drops.
  • Organise the transfer of school records 2 weeks before the move.
  • Put together a 'last minute cleaning kit' − cleaning items for the last clean up before you move out – broom, dust cloth, dust pan, mop, etc. You could need them in your new home as well.
  • Schedule phone and electricity disconnections about a week before your move day − you don’t want to have to pay for utilities when you aren’t even there!
  • Cancel newspapers deliveries, cable, pest control, cleaning help, lawn services, etc. about a week before the move.
  • Mail your 'change of address' forms at least a week before your move date.
  • Clean the stove before you move out.
  • Defrost the fridge about a day before your move.
  • Take time to say goodbye to friends and neighbours before your move day − chatty neighbours can cause unwanted delays on the day!
  • By law, a moving company can’t transport hazardous materials such as gasoline, bottled gases and other flammables, ammunition and explosives. It's best to make alternative arrangements for these materials.
  • Try to leave yourself enough cash on hand to get you through the day (drinks, snacks, tolls, parking, etc. could be needed unexpectedly!).
  • Breathe...the rest is up to us!
